Oil and Hydrocarbon Remediation

Designing and engineering

Fast, On-Site Treatment Without Added Chemicals
BrightWater provides a mechanical, chemical-free approach to hydrocarbon remediation. Our mobile treatment systems can be deployed quickly to process contaminated water at or near the spill site, reducing the need to transport large volumes of impacted water for off-site treatment or disposal. Unlike conventional methods that rely primarily on dispersants, washing agents, sorbents, or biological additives, BrightWater uses a controlled mechanical treatment process. The system is designed to break down hydrocarbon compounds, reduce dissolved hydrogen sulfide, and return treated water that is safer and easier to manage.
A Different Approach to Spill Response
Mechanical recovery is generally the preferred first step in oil-spill response, but traditional containment and skimming methods can be limited by weather, water conditions, access, recovery rates, and the amount of water collected with the oil. California’s Office of Spill Prevention and Response recognizes that no single response tool is suitable for every incident and that the best environmental outcome may require a combination of approaches. BrightWater can support that response strategy by adding mobile, on-site treatment capacity after hydrocarbons have been recovered, contained, or collected.
The BrightWater advantage
Rapid deployment Modular equipment can be mobilized to spill sites, terminals, industrial facilities, pipelines, storage areas, and temporary containment locations. On-site remediation Contaminated water can be treated where it is collected, reducing trucking, handling, storage, and secondary exposure risks. Chemical-free operation The process is mechanical and does not depend on adding dispersants, solvents, surfactants, or biological treatment agents. Hydrocarbon destruction, not relocation The technology is designed to disrupt the chemical bonds within hydrocarbon compounds rather than simply transfer contamination from one medium to another. Hydrogen sulfide reduction BrightWater treatment can reduce dissolved H₂S concentrations and the associated odor concerns found in certain hydrocarbon-impacted water streams. Reduced waste burden By treating recovered water on site, the system may reduce the volume of material requiring transportation, storage, and disposal.

How the Process Works

  • * Hydrocarbon-contaminated water is collected and directed into the BrightWater treatment system. * The water passes through a controlled mechanical treatment process. * Hydrocarbon molecules are subjected to conditions designed to disrupt carbon-hydrogen bonding and reduce contaminant concentrations. * Dissolved H₂S and associated odors are reduced during treatment. * Treated water is tested against project-specific discharge, reuse, or disposal requirements.

APPLICATIONS

BrightWater’s oil-spill remediation technology may be used for:
  • Recovered spill water
  • Oil and water mixtures from containment systemsr
  • Tank, pit, sump, and vessel cleanout water
  • Pipeline and terminal incident
  • Produced water and hydrocarbon-impacted process water
  • Emergency response staging areas
  • Shoreline and inland recovery operations
  • Temporary storage and frac-tank treatment
  • Refinery, petrochemical, and industrial cleanup projects

Designed to Work Alongside Spill-Response Operations

BrightWater is not intended to replace containment, booming, skimming, vacuum recovery, or other emergency-response measures. It adds a treatment stage that can help response teams manage the contaminated water generated during recovery. This distinction is important. California defines oil-spill cleanup agents as chemical or biological substances used to remove, disperse, or otherwise clean petroleum from state waters, while mechanical containment and recovery equipment are treated separately. Because BrightWater’s process is mechanical and chemical-free, its regulatory treatment may differ from products categorized as dispersants, surface-washing agents, bioremediation agents, solidifiers, or other oil-spill cleanup agents. Final regulatory requirements will depend on the location, application, discharge pathway, and incident command structure.

Measurable Treatment Performance

BrightWater treatment is built around field verification. Depending on the project, testing may include:
  • Total petroleum hydrocarbons
  • Oil and grease
  • Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes
  • Volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds
  • Dissolved H₂S
  • Odor reduction
  • Turbidity
  • Chemical oxygen demand
  • Additional site-specific contaminants
Recent BrightWater operating results have demonstrated complete dissolved H₂S removal in tested applications, including reduction from approximately 50 mg/L to non-detect and from approximately 9 to 10 mg/L to zero. Testing also confirmed no rebound over a 90-day observation period. At the referenced operating configuration, three units treated approximately 20,571 barrels per day.

Chemical-Free Treatment

Many spill-response products are regulated according to their composition, toxicity, effectiveness, and potential effects on aquatic environments. California requires review of oil-spill cleanup agents that may affect state surface waters, and federal listing alone does not automatically authorize a product’s use in a spill. The EPA also states that inclusion on the National Contingency Plan Product Schedule does not mean that it approves, recommends, licenses, or certifies a listed product. Use during an oil discharge must be authorized by the appropriate Federal On-Scene Coordinator under applicable response rules. BrightWater’s mechanical approach is intended to minimize the introduction of additional substances into the treatment stream while giving operators a practical method for treating contaminated water at the point of need.

Built for Time-Critical Response

During a spill, time, access, treatment capacity, and logistics matter. BrightWater systems are designed to be mobilized quickly, scaled to the required flow rate, and integrated with existing recovery operations. The result is a straightforward response model: Recover the contaminated water. Treat it on site. Verify the results. Reduce the waste stream.

Treatment results vary according to influent chemistry, contaminant concentration, flow rate, temperature, operating conditions, and project requirements. References to hydrocarbon destruction, H₂S reduction, non-toxicity, and treatment capacity should be supported by project-specific analytical data. Use of any treatment technology during an oil-spill response remains subject to applicable federal, state, local, incident-command, discharge, and disposal requirements.
